MUDULATION

Wow, this is going to get really intense. I believe the most confusing component of music is chord and scale substitution. I receive questions all the time wondering if you should or should not switch scales while improvising? Switching scales while improvising or writing a master piece, will come in time. It's like a weight lifter slowly increasing the weight to lift. It all depends on how far you would like to advance. If you like the sound of blues, then you may be happy playing the standard 12 bar blues. Or if you like the heavy metal sound and all the obscure scales you will achieve that sound. I personally like to play them all. It is a mood driven habit. If I have a few brews and got stuck in traffic, I crank out some heavy music. But, knowing how to play, is the main objective here. If you don't understand music, then you can't express your feelings. Or at least on the guitar. From the beginning of these lessons I've stated that I do nothing the c...

TRITONE SUBSTITUTION

In jazz music, a tritone substitution is the use in a chord progression of a dominant seventh chord (major/minor seventh chord) that is three whole steps (a tritone: 6 semitones) away from the original dominant seventh chord. For example, D♭7 would be the tritone substitution for G7 while F would substitute for B, and G♭ for C. Tritone substitutions are also used in improvisation and are commonly used to create tension during a solo. Tritone substitution chords linked by common tones Play sound C7 followed quickly by the tritone it contains (E-B♭), its inversion (B♭-E), and then G♭7 Problems listening to this file? See media help. The reason these dominant seventh chords may be substituted for each other is that they share the two pitches that form a tritone in each chord (the third and seventh, albeit reversed). In a G7 chord, the third is B and the seventh is F. In the D♭7 chord, the third is an F and the seventh is C♭ (enharmonically B). Note that the interval between the...

ALTERED TONES

In music, an altered chord, an example of alteration, is a chord with one or more diatonic notes replaced by, or altered to, a neighboring pitch in the chromatic scale. Jazz In jazz and jazz harmony, the term altered chord refers to a dominant chord "in which neither the fifth nor the ninth appears unaltered" and which thus "contains b5 &/or #5, and b9 &/or #9".[2] – in other words, where the 5th and the 9th are raised or lowered by a single semi-tone, or omitted. This chord is notated as an "alt chord" (e.g. G7alt Play (help•info)). Altered chords are thus constructed using the following notes, some of which may be omitted: • root • 3 • b5 and/or #5 • b7 • b9 and/or #9 The chord may thus include both a flatted and sharped form of the altered fifth or ninth, e.g. G7b5#5b9; however, it is more common to use only one such alteration per tone, e.g. G7b5b9, G7b5#9, G7#5b9, or G7#5#9. The choice of inversion, or the omission of certain tones...

MUSIC ESSENTIAL

For musicians, tecnique refer to the mental and physical command of music. Instrumental prowess may or may not be a musician's objective. There are great composers who don't perform and virtuoso intrumentalists and singers who don't compose. Regardless of your chosen niches or goal, aquiring the ability to ma nipulate music- mentally and/or physically required honing and balancing two totally different sets of chops. Music was not mere entertainment, but a moral force"a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy". The Music directly reflect our powerfull, tortured personality. All music is born of the same three basic elements: rhythm, melodi and harmony. All melodies and harmonies derived from only twelve different notes, but with ingredients this minimal, how can we categorize music into such diverse genre as classical, jazz, blues, rock, metal, fusion, R &B, country and hip hop? Rhythm is the bonding agen that allow musical pitches to be...
